Why Post-Interview Gratitude is Vital to Your Job Hunting Success

You know what a Cover Letter is for. Now here’s a little about sending thank you letter after interview.

There are three benefits of writing a thank you letter after interview:

  1. You Get To Thank Them: Whenever you’re preparing your thank you note, you should open with thank you so much for your time and I really enjoyed meeting you.
  2. You Get To Sell Yourself: Right after you thank them, add your own unique identifier. Put in your sales pitch. Reinforce why you’re the best candidate for the job and why you’re such a great fit.
  3. You Get To Reassure the Employer You’re Interested: The third benefit is to reassure the employer of your enthusiasm and interest in the position.

Send a Thank You Email Ahead of Your Snail-Mail Thank You Letter!

Since snail mail is slower to reach the interviewer, I suggest sending an email the same day of your interview (and make sure you spell-check it). This will ensure the interviewer can factor in your favorable thank you message when providing feedback to the appropriate person.

I also suggest sending a handwritten note as well because it requires more energy, making it inherently much more thoughtful. If you intend to also send a handwritten note (which I strongly recommend), you might want to mention in the email you have also sent something in the mail but wanted to send a short email for expediency’s sake. 

What Do I Say in My Thank You Letter after interview? 

Regarding the content of your thank you letter, make sure to begin with words of thanks followed by a brief recap of a few of the most critical points. You do not and should not relive the entire interview in written form.

The main points for your recap should focus on your match for the job.

This will also make visible for the interviewer your match (remember reassurance).

Complete the note with remarks confirming your interest in the position.

I would recommend that the length of the e-mail (or handwritten note) be short enough so they will read it but long enough to include relevant substance that will keep you fresh in their mind.
